During the Nordic wars between 1655 en 1660, Sweden occupied several Danish territories. In November 1659 Fynen was freed of the Swedes. Kerteminde had been freed comparatively easily and the Swedes withdraw themselves from Odense to Nyborg. For Nyborg, which had to make to many sacrifices, however, it was a cruel event. The Swedes were within the walls of the city, the Danish and Dutch army was attacking on the landside and the Dutch and Danish fleets were bombing from the seaside. Finally the town was liberated, but at great costs and losses.
The liberation of the island is celebrated in Nyborg. On this occasion the victims are commemorated, children are involved by making an exhibition about the events in Nyborg castle.
During the liberation of the island several countries were involved. The Dutch naval hero Michiel de Ruyter played an important part together with the Danish admiral Bjelke and the German field marshal Schack. Drs Veronica Frenks, who organized in 2007 a big exhibition about Michiel de Ruyter in his birthplace Vlissingen (Vlissingen) and wrote a book about the world of Michiel de Ruyter, came to Nyborg to give a glimpse of the life of Michiel de Ruyter and his time . The lecture was an abbreviated and lighter version of this article, illustrated by pictures.
